Real-Time Marketing & PR Chapter 13

David Scott discussed the idea of social media being blocked at work and IBM Social Computing Guidelines. Often company executives are the gatekeepers for the company social media. The reasoning for this is solely based on wanting their employees to be as productive as possible.

The IBM Guidelines are a standard set of guidelines. These guidelines are put in place by the companies administrators. Most companies or institutions have a standard set of IBM guidelines, which employees, consumers, students, and any other users must abide by. I have been exposed to this in my academic and work atmosphere. I see pros and cons to having this in place. One of the more beneficial elements is that content is controlled, and you minimize the risk of negative content. The con to this is the company media relations team may not be able to respond to any potential questions, comments, or concerns in a timely fashion.

As social media continues to grow I see nothing but potential. Companies are able to connect with consumers in real time. PR departments are able to use the company media platforms as tools to measure the success of campaigns vie analytics, and comments.

Where Do You Get Your News

Social media sites are becoming more and more known for their shared news links. When I check my Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram I am continuously seeing all of the news being shared that I would see if I were to watch the news channel. Obviously I don’t rely on these sites as my primary news source, but I do find it very interesting that often I will hear about an issue or news event before I hear about it on my main news sites, and channels.

I see this as a very convenient and important opportunity. I would bet that the number of people who check their social media sites as opposed to watching or reading news is very high. By news outlets having a social media presence they are forced to be seen by people when they are shared whether it is simply reading the headline, or taking the next step and opening the article.

I see great potential in this new spread of important events. As a nation we are not educated enough of what is going on around the world let alone in our own communities. If we are not going to take the necessary steps to inform ourselves at least our social media friends are helping us out by sharing links they find important.

This Week In Ada

The weekend started with rain and ended with a beautiful Sunday. On Saturday the village of Ada had their annual Harvest and Herb festival. Main street was blocked off, and the road was lined with vendors. The rain started early in the morning, but it wasn’t long before the sun overcame the clouds. The festival was an all day event. Once the festival ended the community members started to make their way over to Dial Roberson Stadium for the Polar Bear football game.

The Polar Bears lost their first night game to Baldwin Wallace (BW) by 1-point Saturday.  The game started with Baldwin Wallace jumping to a 14-0 start, but it wasn’t long before the Polar Bears rallied.  The game was back and fourth. ONU would score then Baldwin Wallace would score. In the final minutes ONU had the chance to go up by two until starting kicker Andrew Dimario missed a field goal. From there the Polar Bears had two time outs left. They needed to stop the Baldwin Wallace offense, but could not. BW continued to get first downs ultimately being able to run the clock down to zero with a 1-point lead. The final score was 28 -27.

The night was not all bad though. Many fans were in attendance, and having a good time. The next night game is on Halloween, and is sure to be a good time.
